Fat Grafting New York City

Dr. Cangello is one of only two surgeons in the world trained in Dr. Sydney Coleman’s pioneering techniques of fat grafting by Dr. Coleman himself. After having spent two years with Dr. Coleman performing multiple fat transfer procedures together and by himself, Dr. Cangello learned the techniques that lead to the longest lasting and most natural results with fat grafting.

What Is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting is a plastic surgery procedure that involves removing fat from one area of the body for placement in another area of the body, such as the buttocks or breasts. Fat grafting is also commonly performed to replenish volume in the face that is frequently lost as a result of the aging process. It is also used to correct irregularities (depressions) that can form as a result of a poor outcome from liposuction. It can be used on any part of the body where more volume is needed. The fat is carefully harvested, and refined and then reinjected to round out sections of the body that the patient would like to be fuller or larger (such as the breasts or buttock). Or it can be injected into areas that have lost volume due to fluctuations in weight, the aging process, and a myriad of factors that can affect the volume of subcutaneous fat in the body. The procedure is safe and long-lasting and creates aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking results. The procedure can help those who desire correction of deformities of the subcutaneous tissues, facial rejuvenation, or larger breasts or buttocks. In doing so the goal is to improve your appearance and self-confidence.

Are You a Good Candidate for Fat Grafting?

You will make a good candidate for a fat grafting procedure if you exhibit volume loss in the face as a result of aging, if you’re unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts or buttocks, or if you have had a poor outcome from liposuction surgery, leaving you with an uneven contour. The process of fat transfer is used to replenish volume in areas where it is lacking, so there are a myriad of applications for this procedure which are not limited to what is listed here. Dr. Cangello also requires his patients to be in good health, be close to their ideal weight, follow pre-operative and post-operative instructions, and have realistic expectations about the results that can be achieved with the procedure. One must understand that the procedure may need to be repeated in order to get full or close to full volume correction of a certain area.

Fat transfer (or fat grafting) is, however, ideal for anyone who wants to improve body symmetry, rejuvenate their face to a more youthful appearance, or add shape to areas of the body that lack volume.

Deciding Which Type of Fat Grafting is Right for You

Fat grafting can be used to enhance the appearance of the body in a variety of ways. The procedure is commonly used to replenish volume in areas of the face that have “deflated” as a result of the aging process. It is also frequently used to enhance the buttocks and breasts. There are very few surgeons in the world who use fat grafting also to correct deformities (depressions or irregularities) caused by poor outcomes after liposuction. Dr. Cangello is a co-author of the “Correction of Liposuction Deformities” chapter in the textbook entitled “Fat Injection From Filling to Regeneration” by Dr. Sydney Coleman and has unique experience in this area.

Facial Rejuvenation: Fat transfer is commonly used to restore volume to the face that has been lost with aging. Areas that commonly benefit from fat grafting include the periocular area (upper and lower eyelids and eyebrow, tear troughs and hollows around the eyes called orbital/malar hollows), the mid face and cheek, the nasolabial folds, the jawline, and the temples. By restoring volume to these areas after it has been lost with age, the face looks more youthful. Sometimes fat transfer is combined with other surgical procedures such as: face lift, neck lift and/or blepharoplasty for the best results.

Correction of Liposuction Deformities: Poor results from liposuction can manifest as depressions or contour deformities in treated areas. These irregularities in contour can often be corrected completely or vastly improved with fat grafting. Fat is grafted to areas that have been over suctioned in order to replenish some of the fat that should not have been removed and to restore a smoother contour.

Breast Augmentation: If you want an increase in breast size while avoiding breast implants, fat grafting can provide the perfect solution for you. Fat grafting to the breasts produces a modest size increase and uses your own tissue to augment your breasts, as opposed to a surgical device (breast implant).

Brazilian Butt Lift: For those who desire a fuller and more rounded buttocks, a Brazilian butt lift will provide a well-rounded and smooth buttocks without the use of implants. This procedure utilizes the fat grafting technique to move excess fat in areas that it is not wanted to the buttocks for implantation. Not only is this procedure safe and effective, it also produces results that look incredibly natural.

The Consultation: Creating Your Fat Grafting Plan

Enhancing your body begins with a consultation with Dr. David Cangello in his New York City office. During your consultation, Dr. Cangello will talk to you about your medical history and discuss the results that you can expect from the procedure. For optimal results, you should be completely honest about your current state of health. This includes disclosing information about your allergies, medications you’re taking, personal habits, and surgical procedures that you have had in the past.

Your results can be negatively impacted by significant changes to your body. For this reason, you should be close to your ideal weight. If you’re not within your ideal weight range Dr. Cangello may advise you to postpone the procedure to a later date so that you can experience the long-lasting benefits of the surgery.

Dr. Cangello expertly visualizes your body’s ideal proportions with his artistic vision and excellent attention to detail. He is dedicated to providing personalized, long lasting and natural looking solutions to every patient. To begin creating your plastic surgery plan, he will talk to you about your goals and expectations and will conduct a physical examination to analyze your whole body.

During the physical examination, he will determine the best locations for fat harvesting. He will examine the abdomen, flanks, lower back, and thighs and decide which location has the most suitable fat for transfer. He will then assess the areas targeted for transfer and then determine the amount of fat needed to accomplish the desired results.

After the examination, Dr. Cangello will discuss his findings and let you know which sites will be targeted for liposuction, how much fat will be removed, and how it will benefit the look of the body in that area. Due to the fact that Dr. Cangello creates a unique plastic surgery plan for every patient, his suggestions will be determined by your height, weight, body structure, and goals.

Fat Grafting Preparation

During your consultation, Dr. Cangello will construct a pre-operative plan that you will have to follow to achieve the best results possible. The plan he creates will be designed to cater to your specific needs. It may include changing various aspects of your lifestyle, including dietary changes and other habits that can impact your health. Smoking must be stopped 2-4 weeks prior to surgery and no nicotine in any form can be taken by the patient during the same time period. The instructions may also include stopping certain medications and supplements.

Dr. Cangello is a master of achieving long-lasting results that look natural. He will make sure that the area you choose for fat grafting is smooth, well-contoured, and aesthetically pleasing. He will develop a post-operative plan to help make your recovery quick and comfortable.

Where Will the Surgery Be Performed?

Dr. Cangello will perform the procedure in his New York City office, where he has a fully accredited (AAASF) state-of-the-art operating room on site. During your consultation, you are welcome to ask for a tour of the facility to determine its quality for yourself.

The Recovery Process

Once the procedure is over, you will need to follow Dr. Cangello’s recovery plan. Depending on the area treated, there will be certain steps you have to take to ensure the best results possible. You will be asked to keep pressure off of any grafted areas. You will also wear a compression garment on the areas that fat was harvested from.

In the areas where fat is grafted there can be bruising and swelling that lasts for a week or more. Usually by one month postoperative the vast majority of the swelling has dissipated, although it takes six months to one year for all swelling to completely resolve. Bruising usually is gone in ten to fourteen days. Women can easily cover the bruising with makeup after around five to seven days. The donor sites may also bruise and be slightly swollen. Resolution occurs in a similar time frame as the grafted sites.

As with most plastic surgery procedures, you should make plans to take some time off work and avoid strenuous activities so that you may relax and recuperate. You should not need be bed ridden, however getting proper rest and nutrition will be key components of your recovery process.

You may experience some degree of pain during the first few days after the procedure, but Dr. Cangello will prescribe a pain medication to help make you feel more comfortable. While resting, you should minimize pressure on the treated area and wear a compression garment if one is given to you.

If you have a lot of chores to take care of around the house, you should make arrangements to receive help from a friend or family member. Taking care of your body during your recovery period will help the transferred fat cells survive and will enhance your results.
