Thigh Lift New York City
Dealing with significant excess skin and fat on the upper legs can be stressful as it causes many people to feel uncomfortable wearing certain clothing such as dresses, shorts or bathing suits. There are many people who find that their thighs become a difficult area to maintain as they age. Likewise, there are some who encounter difficulties improving the look of their thighs due to their high resistance to diet and exercise. Others have sagging skin and fat in the thigh area as a result of weight loss through diet and exercise or surgery.
The thighs are highly susceptible to having a saggy appearance due to the fact that they contain a large number of stored fat cells, cellulite, and excess skin. Over time, as these things accumulate, it can be difficult to get rid of them, and the resulting appearance isn’t a look that is pleasing to the eye. When they build up, the excess fat, skin and cellulite can make you look older, heavier, and less fit. Many people feel very uncomfortable when their inner thighs become too bulky and begin to feel loose and droopy.
Genetics play a large part in who becomes more susceptible to having saggy inner thighs. There are some who can reduce the bulk of the thighs, particularly the inner thigh with intense exercise and a rigorous diet plan. However, when there is an abundance of excess skin with poor elasticity the only option for treatment is a surgical thigh lift. With plastic surgery, you can enhance the contour of your thighs by removing excess fat and sagging skin. This results in the skin of the thigh being tighter and firmer and allows you to achieve a much nicer silhouette.
What is it A Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift can improve contour, tighten excess skin and reduce inner thigh bulk. Like other areas of the body, weight loss, genetics, or aging can lead to skin that becomes loose and droops. A thigh lift usually involves liposuction to reduce the bulk of the inner thigh, in combination with excision or removal of the excess skin in that area. Patients who have a thigh lift will have a scar on the inner aspect of their thigh, however they are willing to accept this in lieu of having heavy, sagging, loose inner thigh skin and fat.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Thigh Lift?
You are a good candidate for a thigh lift if you are unhappy with excessive skin and loose fat in your thighs. You may feel that the appearance of your thighs and legs does not match how you feel about yourself and your overall fitness. Having excess skin and fat in the thigh area can make you appear heavier and less fit than you actually are.
Ideal thigh lift candidates must be in good health, live in New York City (or be willing to travel), and be motivated to follow Dr. Cangello’s pre-operative and post-operative instructions. This means following any guidelines set to facilitate the healing process. You must also have realistic expectations for the surgery.
For optimal results, you should be close to your ideal weight and your weight should be stable. Extreme changes in weight can adversely affect your results and necessitate further procedures to recreate them. You should also understand that a thigh lift should not be considered as a replacement for maintaing a healthy lifestyle which includes diet and exercise. While you do need to take time off from performing strenuous activities, exercise is an important part of maintaining your new body. Without it, you can easily gain weight, and reverse the results you have achieved.
If you want your thighs to be tighter, thinner and more defined, Dr. Cangello can help you decide if thigh lift surgery is right for you. There are some patients who may achieve improvement in inner thigh contour with other less invasive procedures such as thigh liposuction or non-invasive skin tightening with Ultherapy. Dr. Cangello can help you determine which procedure(s) would be best suited for you.
The Consultation: Creating Your Thigh Lift Surgery Plan
Your thigh lift journey begins with a consultation with Dr. David Cangello in our New York City office located in Tribeca. Dr. Cangello will discuss your medical history and the results that you expect from the thigh lift. For your thigh lift procedure to proceed safely, it is imperative that you are honest about your allergies, medications, personal habits, and procedures you’ve had in the past.
You will also need to tell him if you are pregnant or are planning on having children in the near future, since the changes to your body can influence your results. If you are planning to lose more than twenty pounds after surgery you should inform Dr. Cangello as this may cause the skin of the thighs to sag again. For this reason you should be within ten to fifteen pounds of your ideal or desired weight. If you are either planning to become pregnant or lose significant weight, Dr. Cangello may advise you to postpone the procedure to a later date.
Dr. Cangello will ask about your goals for your thigh lift and how you would like your thighs to appear. He strives to create the best contour possible. To achieve the best contour for you, the surgeon must be able to visualize in his mind the thigh proportion relative to the rest of the body. This requires exceptional artistic vision and attention to detail, both of which are hallmarks of Dr. Cangello’s work.
Dr. Cangello will conduct a physical examination to look at your body as a whole. He will analyze the amount of skin tissue and extra fat located around your thighs to determine the best treatment option(s) for your body.
Dr. Cangello customizes each thigh lift procedure to fit the unique needs of each individual patient. He will recommend a technique based on your height, weight, build, anatomy, and goals.
Thigh Lift Techniques
There are two main types of thigh lift. These vary in terms of the size and shape of the incision that is used to get rid of the excess skin and fat. A specific procedure will be suggested based on your unique needs and preferences.
*Medial (Inner) Thigh Lift – Targets the inner thigh. It is great for people who have a hard time eliminating excess fat from this part of the body through diet and exercise. It can also be used to help reduce the appearance of flaccid sagging skin which occurs as a result of its decreased elasticity over time. It is commonly performed for people who have droopy skin as a result of massive weight loss. Patients who have a small to moderate amount of excess sagging skin in the inner thigh, particularly limited to the upper inner thigh may be candidates for a “mini” thigh lift, which limits the incision to the groin crease. The benefit of having this type of incision is that the scar remains in the groin crease so shorts or skirts can be worn with no visible scarring. Alternatively, patients who have a moderate to severe amount of excess skin or fat in the medial thigh area will also have an incision from the pubic are down to the inner aspect of the knee. Often times liposuction is used to remove excess fat in conjunction with medial thigh lift.
*Lateral (Outer) Thigh Lift – This procedure is for patients who have sagging skin in the outer thigh, particularly in the “saddle bag” or hip area. Often times the sagging skin trails around to the posterior part of the thigh near the buttock as well. This procedure results in a scar that begins in the groin, goes around the hip and ends up in the buttock crease.
Preparing for Your Thigh Lift
Dr. Cangello is dedicated to achieving the best results possible. During your initial thigh lift consultation, he will develop a pre-operative plan for you to follow. It is essential that you follow his guidance to reach your individual goals. This plan may include changes in diet and other lifestyle modifications.
Dr. Cangello will give you instructions to follow for the days leading to your surgery. These instructions may include stopping certain medications and supplements. You will also be advised not to eat beginning at midnight on the day of your surgery.
Expectations: Different thigh lifts are available depending on your needs and preferences. We will consult with you to determine the best approach for you. The intended result is for you to have a refined body contour and improved shape.
We will create a post-op plan specifically for you to minimize pain and discomfort. We want you to be able to quickly nurse yourself back to health. Your thighs will be wrapped in elastic bandages or compression garments while you recover, and you will be asked to refrain from any strenuous exercise or physical exertion.
After The Procedure
After your procedure, you should commit to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthily and exercising after your thigh lift will help facilitate lifelong results. You should also follow your surgeon’s recovery advice to minimize the chance for any complications. You may get back to work (light duty/ office work) around two weeks after surgery. Strenuous activity including exercise can be performed four to six weeks after surgery, but not until then.
Recovery: Bruising can last up to a few weeks, and swelling should diminish significantly by around one month post-operative. A drain will be left in each thigh for up to a few days. Drains are used to prevent the accumulation of fluid that is naturally produced by the body. You will be responsible for keeping track of the amount of fluid emptied from the drains while you are at home and reporting the amounts to Dr. Cangello and his staff until they are removed. Your final results will be evident after six months, and should last indefinitely with proper attention to your health.
