With an ideal nose shape, the rest of a person’s facial features come together beautifully. This is why rhinoplasty remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for people of all ages.
Because the results from rhinoplasty are so transformative, it is often chosen by students before the new school year starts. This procedure can give them a boost of confidence and help them feel more comfortable while pursuing their education.
Below we explore why more students are choosing cosmetic nose surgery, and what you can expect from the overall process.
Why Students are Choosing Rhinoplasty
In many cases, this procedure is chosen not because patients want to dramatically change themselves, but rather, they’re seeking minor adjustments. Through small adjustments to the nose, rhinoplasty actually highlights a patient’s natural features and complements their appearance.
In fact, Dr. Cangello was recently featured by Seventeen Magazine for helping a 17-year-old student feel more comfortable with herself through rhinoplasty, which highlighted the features she already loved. Angie, a high school senior, was confident with herself but never liked the appearance of her nose.
Dr. Cangello perfectly balanced her facial features by smoothing out her nasal bridge and by giving the nasal tip more projection to refine her profile. The results were so subtle and seamless that most of Angie’s friends didn’t even notice. But most importantly, Angie stated that she finally felt “complete” after the procedure, as do many students who choose this popular surgery.
How Appearance is Tied to Confidence
For many students, the decision to undergo rhinoplasty is one that has been considered for a very long time. Finally being able to feel comfortable with their appearance can have tremendous advantages for students entering some of their most important years. When people look and feel their best, they perform their best.
Even subtle enhancements can greatly affect a person’s outlook and self-esteem. This very topic was the subject of a study led by psychologists at Ruhr-University Bochum. Their study of approximately 550 people revealed that plastic surgery patients demonstrated more enjoyment of life, satisfaction, and self-esteem after their procedure.
The study also showed that most patients have realistic expectations about plastic surgery: a majority of them simply wanted to feel better and develop more confidence, rather than going into the procedure thinking it would solve all of their problems.
The researchers found that the study “…indicated overall positive effects on appearance satisfaction, goal attainment, well-being, life quality, self-perceived attractiveness, and decreased anxiety and dysmorphia…there were also small decreases in depression and social phobia.”
Planning Your Surgery: What You Need to Know
Patients will need to set aside several weeks for recovery, so it’s recommended that the procedure be performed during the summer break. As recovery progresses, the results will gradually settle.
Patients can expect the following during their rhinoplasty recovery:
First Week
Most patients experience bruising, swelling, and feelings of numbness on the nose during the first week. The face might look puffy as well, and there may be some drainage of blood from the nostrils. These symptoms typically peak during the first week. The nasal splint will be removed at the end of the first week.
Second Week
By the second week, most people resume their regular daily activities. Some bruising and swelling may still be present, but these symptoms should improve significantly by the end of the second week.
Third – Fourth Week
Most swelling will have resolved by this point. In some cases, very minor swelling may persist for around six months, but this usually isn’t noticeable by others. By the end of the fourth week, the nose will look quite good and the results will have settled nicely. Exercise is usually resumed four to six weeks after surgery.
